The Document of MGS2 Info

Kojima NoteThis DVD contains the most insight info ever to be released about a Video Game. Before discussing what is in the disc, I must say that it is not for all the public or the occasional gamer. This DVD is intended for the Metal Gear fan that wants to know and see a lot more, for game developers and for 3D Artists that want to check out how all the 3D in real time is managed to create such a stunning effect with so little RAM, an incredible work indeed.

Mainly this DVD has two sections: Making and VR Missions. In the Making section, you have access to the 3D Models of the Characters and Mechanics, which include from Snake to the Parrot and from Ray to a wall mounted camera (including Rex and some production models). All of them linked to the appropiate Sketches, their variations, some items and lightning and to appreciate them, you can move the camera at will. Then you get all the Backgrounds (areas of the game), in these you can move the camera freely too, and take a look at the incredible amount of detail, also playing with the fog and colors. They include all the stages in the game, plus a few that were discarded and one from MGS.

The next section is one that shines. The Poligon Demos let you run any Cinema on the game, without sound. But, you can freeze the camera at any moment, and move it to see all the detail, craft and tricks done to create the atmosphere and effects. This can consume hours of your life, moving frame by frame and searching for detail here and there (looking at textures, small models of objects that have great detail for just being background or insignificant items, etc).

The Program section of the disc, contains simple but very interesting information about some of the technics used. these include the actual memory map, AI techniques for the soldiers, sound and movie streamming (developed since Policenauts) and more info. Although it is non technical, it is very interesting to read.

The next section is Sound, and it lets you play the background music while using the dynamic feature created for the game, to change between alert, evasion and escape at any moment. Fun, but not as great as the rest of the features, although I must say that they made a great job on this for the game, since the music never stops, giving a continuity feeling to the game.

Then you have the Game Plan, this section has access to the digitized docs that resume the conceptual work behing MGS2. The drawback, it is only in the original language... Maybe one day....

Finally, we get to another interesting point in this disc, the Script. It has all the script for the game, the original one used to create the game. Of course there are some differences with the actual game, specially at the ending. Also, it has some interesting notes about some actions or scenes that are, say, revealing. I even had to make some notes in the MGS2 Ending Analysis from some of the small notes made in that text. For me, this feature was the most important and the first I read and saw in the disc.

Next, you get te Chronicle, that has the main cornerstones and events during the production of the game, linked to the respective material, such as pictures, storyboards, trailers, etc.

The Special Footage section, has several videos that vary from trailers (some of them only released here, others that were included in the MGS2 Premium Disc), and internal videos showuing the staff, motion capture actors and more.

The last section, Item, has pictures of several versions of MGS and MGS2, as well as a gallery of toys and promotional items.. even including some of the art of the books.

Now, the other main feature of this DVD, are the VR Mission. It includes 5 VR Missions from Substance. The first one is classical Sneaking with Snake. The second one, is Snake again in a target shooting mission using the USP. In the third mission, you take control of Raiden, using the SOCOM to kill al the guards in a stage without being seen. On the fourth mission, you have to use the HF blade to dispose of several targets, obviously with Raiden again. And in the last one, you have both, the PSG1 and the PSG-T, to cover Meryl from 26 soldiers that are closing around her in a terrain with lots of places to hide.
