E3 2004 Snake Eater Press Kit Information

The Cover of the Press kit reads "ТРИ", at first I imagined what it would spell if I placed a mirror in the middle, and figured it would be TAW and TOM, but since that lead me nowhere I tried other options. The "inverted N" sounded quite Russian to me.. so I did a bit of translation and got that "ТРИ" means three (obviously, but at least now I know that ??? means "that" in Russian, or so does the online translator say)

Here is the text from the Notes that come with the Press Kit:

MGS3 RELIEVES YESTERDAY TO SURVIVE TOMORROW

SNAKE EATER

"Mr. Kojima came to me and said, 'MGS3 takes place in 1964. And the 60s -it's 007!' Before composing the song, I started doing research on the music back then. The subtitle of the game was already finalized as 'Snake Eater', but I did not know of the details of the story yet. One characteristc of 007 songs is that 'the lyrics are about the concept of the story.' With this in mind, along with the element of the'serious life-death battle', I selected 3 keywords -'life', 'time', and 'crime.' After more than 10 retakes of the melody and arrangement, the original version was completed. Then due to Mr. Kojima's strong desire, we had a live orchestra perform and record the song. The version here is a self remix aiming for a '60s abstract hiphop' style (which does not exist in reality) insisting on the use of instruments and sound materials from the 60s and placing them in a collage-like fashion."

SCORE

Harry Gregson-Williams, composer the scores of Hollywood blockbuster films such as "Shrek", "Spy Game", and "Enemy of The State", jokingly said after working on MGS2, "I would work on the next one if it were to take place in the jungle." At that moment, in Hideo Kojima's mind was the plan to do so. "I was really surprised when I was offered to work on MGS3 because the setting was indeed the jungle." For the previous game, Harry worked on the rearrangement of the main theme of MGS. With MGS3, he has come up with an original, fast-paced jungle-flavor score. "Instead of focusing on the 60s setting, I've been respecting the pre-existing MGS taste." While effectively using the well known melodies in the demo sequences, Harry Gregson-Williams is challenging to structure a new MGS world.

1964

1961: First manned spaceship Vostok 1 launched by USSR. The same year, US President Kennedy promises to land a human on the moon through the "Apollo Project." 1962: USSR deploys intermediate- range nuclear missiles in Cuba, allowing her to shoot a nuclear missile to anywhere in the Western hemisphere. The Cuba Missile Crisis - as it was later called - was the worst scenario in human history of a nuclear war between the US and USSR, which was prevented at the last minute. 1963: President Kennedy gets shot in Dallas during his campaign. Vice President Johnson becomes president. And 1964: In retaliation of the torpedo fired at USS Madox by North Vietnam, the US attacks the torpedo ship base of North Vietnam. US Congress passes the Tonkin Gulf Resolution - de facto declaration of war. In Tokyo the 18th Olympics were held, and films like "A Hard Day's Night" - the first film featuring The Beatles - and "Dr. Strangelove" depicting the fear of nuclear weapons during the Cold War debuted in 1964. Approaching the world was the greatest crisis never recorded in history. The Cold War. World War II, ended by the dropping of the A-bomb, left major scars in the world, showing the threat of nuclear weapons. The US and USSR hid information from each other and started competing in the nuclear arms race. Trying to find out what the invisible enemy was up to...obtaining enemy information through a needle hole to stop enemy plans was taken care of by a certain kind of people -spies. An era when the two superpowers competed through politics, economics, military, ideology, and all other areas - it was an era of spies when they infiltrated enemy grounds, obtained hidden information to their homelands, and prevented enemy operations before they were executed.

MGS3

MGS has always depicted special infiltration and espionage missions of the near future. In its third installment, Hideo Kojima goes "back to its origin" and sets the timeframe in the 60s. The newest and "oldest" setting of the series is the jungle. Camouflage, protective coloration, trees, swamps, and darkness... The "camouflage index" showing how much you have blended into the surroundings adds depth to the stealth mission. Survival -the duty of life transcending the mission. Search, capture, and eat snakes, fish, and fruits living in the jungle. Snake turns from a hider to a seeker. The scenes of the 60s. The world is split in East and West. The biggest races were over nuclear arms and rockets. People trembling in the fear for nuclear weapons while sheltered in peace feared of the invisible enemy and desired nuclear weapons overpowering the enemy. In the time of the Cold War when spies were at their prime, the mission of "Snake" with the world in stake is executed against those soldiers who survived war. The battle to live. The stealth to battle. MGS3 challenges the fundamental experience.

MEME X GENE X SCENE = MGS 3

Snake Eater

what a thrill
with darkness and silence through the night
what a thrill
I'm searching and I'll melt into you
what a fear in my heart
but you're so supreme!
I give my life
not for honor, but for you (snake eater)
in my time there'll be no one else
crime, it's the way I fly to you (snake eater)
I'm still in a dream of the snake eater
someday you go through the rain
someday you feed on a tree frog,
it's ordeal, the trial to survive
for the day we see new light
I give my life
not for honor, but for you (snake eater)
in my time there'll be no one else
crime, it's the way I fly to you (snake eater)
I'm still in a dream of the snake eater
Snake Eater -abstracted camouflage-
